The Area Study Centre for Europe at the University of Karachi organized an informal session with renowned International lawyer and research scholar Ms. Sana Khan on ‘The Evolution of Human Rights Law in the EU’ on Thursday, December 12, 2024. The session was moderated by Dr Tasneem Sultana, faculty member of ASCE and attended by MPhil and PhD students, faculty members of affiliated disciplines, research affiliates and alumni. The speaker highlighted the significance of human rights for the European Union in the light of history and the fundamental freedoms of the European Union. The speaker is a practicing High Court Lawyer in Pakistan and also a faculty member at the Law School of University of Karachi. Ms. Khan shared her vision about human rights and why it is important to achieve global peace and harmony through participation in human rights emergencies and crises in the present day multilateral global system. She emphasized that modern frameworks of human rights are an ‘intricate web of law, politics and economics’. The discussion was well received by the participants; issues related to asylum laws, legitimacy of political protection and migration was discussed in detail.
